Tauern Tunnel is given a surface finish using
NP® liquid glass technology

Innovative protective coating demonstrably reduces cleaning costs and increases road safety

Hülzweiler/Austria.

The old Tauern Tunnel tube has reopened after renovation. Several thousand square metres of the wall of the tunnel's southbound tube have been given a surface finish using NP® liquid glass technology for faster and more effective cleaning and to provide protection against environmental effects. Work by Nanopool of Salzburg on the northbound
tube should also be complete by the end of October.

ASFINAG GmbH has been successfully using NP® liquid glass on tunnel walls to reduce costs since 2007. NP® liquid glass has already been applied to the epoxy coating and concrete inner leaf in the Bruck an der Mur area in the Tanzenberg Tunnel, the Massenberg Tunnel and in the tunnels at Kirchdorf.

Applying the NP® liquid glass system to the walls of the Tauern Tunnel

The technology is applied to the tunnel walls using pressurised tanks. This produces an ultra-thin film of liquid glass which penetrates even the smallest cracks and thus prevents any ingress of dirt or water. Adhesions of dirt and therefore costly cleaning work are significantly reduced.

The operator makes substantial cost savings and this NP® liquid glass technology also makes a sustainable contribution to road safety and the environment. Cleaning no longer requires chemical cleaners, simply water, and the water pressure can also be reduced from 130 to 30 bar. Cleaning has been reduced from twice a year to once. This means that
diverting all the traffic, which also incurs substantial indirect costs, only needs to be done once a year for cleaning work to be carried out.
